What is a general election? What other types of elections are held in the United States?
Q. What is a general election? What other types of elections are held in the United States?
Asked by Amy L - Sun Apr 5 12:37:13 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. General elections are held every two years in November. They are intended for electing members of the House, Senate, and the President as well as a plethora of state and local officials. There are also primary elections held before the general elections. These are held primarily to determine the candidates for a political party. In case on non-partisan elections, primaries usually serve to choose the top candidates for the general election. There are special elections to fill vacancies. For example, if an election official should die, resign, or be removed from office, a special election to fill that position is usually held.
