"Nomination" is part of the process of selecting a candidate for either election to an office, or the bestowing of an honor or award. "Presumptive nominee" is a term used when a person or organization believes that the nomination in inevitable. The act of being a candidate in a race is called a "candidacy."

"Candidate" is a derivative of the Latin "candida" (white). In Ancient Rome, people running for political office would usually wear togas chalked and bleached to be bright white at speeches, debates, conventions, and other public functions.

Who are the most important Presidential candidates?
Q. I choose my selection of most important candidates based on what I consider important, rather than superficial things ( first black, first woman, etc. ), and not on chance of winning. Candidates who clearly state their position, and bring up issues that should be brought up in debates, not just the 'hot button' issues. In order of importance: 1. Mike Gravel 2. Dennis Kucinich 3. Ron Paul 4. Ralph Nader These are my most important, not ones who have the best chance of winning.

A. How can they be important when they are all nobodies? Granted, Ralph Nader has the distinction of giving George Bush the presidency and thereby shares responsibility for 9/11, global warming, and the lack of consumer protections. But the rest?

Why don't the candidates actually answer the questions during their debates?
Q. I noticed during the recent debates that when presented with a simple "Yes or No" question, the candidates go over their time limit talking about anything but the question. As a school teacher, if I gave a test and a student did not answer the question, I would mark it as incorrect. So, all candidates would have a failing grade. They should all receive special tutoring from the "No child/candidate Left Behind Act," and should not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities like sports, music, and campaigning. Again, why don't the candidates actually answer the questions during their debates?

Where can I find good and correct information regarding candidates running for office?
Q. I would like to find a good website (or several websites) that will give me correct information regarding the candidates running for office (in the US), specifically for president. I don t want opinions or link to blogs, or any far right-wing or far left-wing sites that sugar coats the facts to make their party look good. I m looking for facts. I also make it a point not to vote for a specific party; I vote for the person who I feel will do a better job. In the debates you always hear of one person bringing up they voted this way or that, but the other person says it s a lie. I don t follow every move the candidates make but obviously this is a critical presidential election coming up and I want to make sure my vote goes to the right… [cont.]

A. If you want to review voting records, try Thomas (thomas.loc.gov). There are also a ton of books that you can buy. Try "Congressional Voting Scores and Interest Group Ratings." I'm not sure if DC is it's only location but if there is a Politics and Prose near you just go there and they have every resource you could hope for and their sales people are generally very informative/helpful. Hope this helps.
