An election is a formal decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy since the 17th century. Elections may fill offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organizations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations. The universal use of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens. Elections were considered an oligarchic institution and most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment, by which officeholders were chosen by lot. Electoral reform describes the process of introducing fair electoral systems where they are not in place, or improving the fairness or effectiveness of existing systems. Psephology is the study of results and other statistics relating to elections (especially with a view to predicting future results). To elect means "to choose or make a decision", and so sometimes other forms of ballot such as the referendum are referred to as elections, especially in the United States. GNU Free Documentation License What significant event happened during the 2006 congressional elections? Q. I am trying to find out how this election was different than previous midterm congressional elections. Asked by Heather H - Thu Mar 27 18:39:49 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. It wasn't. It was exactly like most midterm elections. The party that controlled the executive branch for the previous six years lost seats in the House. It happens almost everytime. Answered by labowu - Thu Mar 27 18:44:54 2008 How did voting trends drastically change in 2008 elections from previous years? Q. How did voting trends drastically change in 2008 elections from previous years? The presidential primaries and the general election? Will these trends continue or will the earlier trends resume? Asked by djkobra81 - Wed May 20 01:34:37 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Like almost every election prior to 2008, the Democrats have continued to master the art of voter fraud, this time using the help of ACORN. Furthermore, the only clear trend from 2008 is RACISM - Africans (many of whom have never voted a day in their lives) now suddenly show up to vote just because of a black presidential candidate. These trends will definitely continue as this Obama regime will continue consolidate it power, primarily by manipulating the census to gain favorable results by redistricting. 2008 was then end of Democracy as we know it, as Obama and is band of thugs will do all it can to remain in power. Answered by Brian - Sat May 23 19:58:26 2009 How many public elections are there in the US eash, from dogcatcher to president?
Q. The information I'm looking for is: How many elections are held in the US each year? I'm talking about all elections, from the president and congress down to state and city offices and including other elected office like school boards and the like. Basically anybody that has to run for any level of public office. No doubt that varies by year. So I'm probably asking how many elections are held over a four cycle by year. A related question is: how much money is spent running for office and how does that many break down; office, staff, mailings, PR, advertsing, etc? It would be especially valuable to find numbers for advertising that broken down into direct mail, TV, radio, Internet, outdoor, etc. Asked by Ripsnorting - Sat Dec 2 14:49:18 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. You elect the dog catcher? Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question though. Answered by smellyfoot - Sat Dec 2 14:51:27 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Elections"
