An election is a formal decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy since the 17th century. Elections may fill offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organizations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations. The universal use of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens. Elections were considered an oligarchic institution and most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment, by which officeholders were chosen by lot. Electoral reform describes the process of introducing fair electoral systems where they are not in place, or improving the fairness or effectiveness of existing systems. Psephology is the study of results and other statistics relating to elections (especially with a view to predicting future results). To elect means "to choose or make a decision", and so sometimes other forms of ballot such as the referendum are referred to as elections, especially in the United States. GNU Free Documentation License How does an Iranian election candidate get so few votes in his home area? Q. One candidate's number of votes was fewer than the number of campaign staff he had. Wouldn't a candidate be assured of the votes of certain people, like his mum and his campaign staff? Surely anyone who wants to rig an election could at least take the bother to make the numbers convincing? Asked by Old Cynic - Sun Jun 14 07:53:06 2009 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. They didn't even try to cover up this farcical election. The despot has done the same as Mugabe and unfortunately this could have very far reaching implications for the western world. They'd already vetted both candidates anyway, and their system only allows the presidency limited power. Why didn't they let the election go down with more surface legitimacy, with peaceful demonstrations, re-counts, courts, lawyers, etc. There is nothing to lose. Did they panic? This seems like a big miscalculation. Instead of making it look more like an American election, they made it look like a sham. Asked by xaxorm - Fri Jun 19 09:39:25 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Iran's tenth presidential election was held on June 12, 2009. The President of Iran is the highest official elected by direct popular vote, but does not control foreign policy or the armed forces. Candidates have to be vetted by the Guardian Council, a twelve member body consisting of six clerics (selected by Iran's Supreme Leader), and six lawyers (proposed by the head of Iran's judicial system and voted in by the Parliament). The Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran's official news agency, announced that with two-thirds of the votes counted, incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won the election with 66% of the votes cast, and that Mir-Hossein Mousavi had received 33% of the votes cast. Q. Looking at elections historically election polls don't seem to match with the way the votes are actually cast, I know there is the :margin of error" when reporting a poll, but what I would like to know is what percentage of people actually lie to tell the pollsters what they want to hear?
